Massey Farms
Australia’s National Spanish Horse Stud

Primarily a sheep grazing property in the Western District of Victoria, and 52 acres at Lara, less than a one hour drive from Melbourne Airport and the City Center.
“Laraway” - the site under development as a Spanish Horse Breeding Facility is easily accessed via the Princes Freeway by International Clientele Whilst it is ideally situated just 10 minutes from Avalon Airport, for the Interstate buyer.

In the terms of an International Spanish horse breeding entity, the stud established in 1984, is still regarded as being in its infancy. However, it is the only stud in the Asia Pacific Region, recognized around the world for it’s own breeding program and producing a distinct ‘stamp’ of horse.
This is true to the way of “Old Spain”, where century long-standing breeding formulated an Andalusian horse’s type & suitability, which was simply defined by the breeders, family name.

Massey Farms put Australia on the map Internationally, initiating the sale of their PRE Andalusian Progeny & Stallion Services via shipped semen, to countries never before accessed by Australasia. Invited to present stallions before a Tai delegation for the Royal family, approached by the Indian military to supply breeding stock & accepting the first enquiry from Singapore. We are now experienced in shipping to most regions around the world.

Unlike most Andalusian breeders, the management team at Massey Farms believe horse & rider must connect intuitively. We realise, it is impossible to have the ideal horse for every client, so we are happy to assist with referrals.
A full Equine Consultancy service has now evolved, out of the need for greater assistance in finding the ‘right’ Andalusian. In most cases buyers require help, to sift through the distorted information being published by a number of prominent studs and several desperate sellers.
Our aim is to circumvent the profiteers. To help reinstate the good name of the Andalusian breed, and breeder.

Integrity, is paramount at Massey Farms and this is affirmed by the number of return buyers & high-profile people, that take comfort in the additional support we offer.
It is rewarding to have the feedback & know that we have been able to give a rider the opportunity to find their special ‘dream horse’ and make that magical connection.

Aside to this it must be mentioned, that with such a long & illustrious history, politics has played a very strong role in the Andalusian Horses’ development & distribution throughout the world. This continues in Spain even today, with standards for the breed being altered and a new philosophies being introduced. In 2006, a change of Stud Book Management was finalized through the courts. It is now fixed, that the Registry shall pass from the Military to ANCCE, the Breeders Organization.

When it comes to rule, Australia is no different. In recent years there has been allot of confusion and a lack of precise information. The AHAA has performed poorly, prompting the establishment of a new group, known as ACPRE.
Since ACPRE made contact with Spain, announcing that Australian PRE horses would be published to the Spanish Stud Book, both Associations have failed in their Duty of Care, to the owners of these horses & their derivatives. The failure of these 2 National organisations to cooperate has resulted in the AHAA neglecting every aspect of growing the breed; Whilst ACPRE failed so badly in meeting it's commitments to the Pure Spanish Horse owners that it was forced to fold for a time.

And just to prove no-one learnt from these experiences, we now find at least 3 Associations (AHAA, ACPRE & PREA), within Australia. All primarily concerned with the Pure Spanish Horse & vying for memberships that are exclusive; Each one funnels more Australian dollars overseas & leaves the state of domestic competition & promotion, in crumbling disrepair.
Due to this unstable form of administration & questionable benefits, if any, Massey Farms no-longer aligns itself with any of these registries. Although all Massey Farms horses are eligible for registration & have continued to be registered with or without (in the case of the stolen colt SP Inquisitor), supporting paperwork.

Even though Massey Farms has held memberships with both the AHAA & ACPRE; The lack of ethics & whimsical regard for "The Constitution", each was establish on, has seen the farm strike out on it's own; Much like the well respected Peralta brand in Spain.

The farm has evolved around a true understanding of genetics & the early implementation of DNA colour testing; Thus like Peralta, the innovative nature of the Stud Farm & it's role as a leader in the Asia Pacific Region, has become obvious in the quality of horse that carries the Goblet Brand.

At present Massey Farms has a herd of close to 70 Andalusians, including 3 imported mares and it stands 5 Imported Stallions at Stud. All our DNA testing is done off-shore and our horses are recorded domestically with the professional administrative services of the El Caballo Registry.
In this way Massey Farms is “buying Australian” supporting our economy and keeping jobs, whilst maintaining the most up to date technical information available.

Australia has been gifted some of the finest Spanish bloodlines in history, through the brilliance of one man, Ray Williams. Some of the lines this country retains, have now been lost to Spain.
Massey Farms has worked long & hard to retain the diversity of the Australian genetic herd, bringing together a collection of Pure Spanish horses which range in height from 14.2h.h to 17.2h.h. and cover the full colour spectrum; from Silver White through many Grey variations including Pink, into Flaxen; Mulberry & Black-Liver Chestnut.
The breeding herd includes the RARE and ANCIENT tones of a Sandwich-maned Apricot-Dun, Grullo’s; both Blue & Golden (termed Champagne or Pearl by the newly formed, US based ICHR) and an assortment of Black Duns with their undeniable PRIMITIVE markings, which include iridescent qualities. To top this off the stud has an impressive collection of dark horses, progressing in hue from Mahogany Bay to Brown and into the most intense, non-fading Black.

In 2007, 2008 & 2009 every horse bred by Massey Farms came home from a Main Event with the Major Prize. Both the National Champion Led Pure Spanish Gelding & the National Champion Ridden Pure Spanish Stallion were conceived, through the stud breeding program. And the stud can boast another Royal Show Supreme Champion in Victoria, to add to the growing list of winners in WA; SA; NSW & QLD. In fact many horses bred by Massey Farms are undefeated in the showring. However the showring is simply used as a step, in the education of our babies. As every horse is purpose bred for performance. In 2010 a number of youngsters shall embark on their careers in Open Competition.
